History of Red Roof Farm, Inc.

Red Roof Farm began in Northeast Kingdom of Vermont eleven years ago. At one time, Red Roof Farm was a working farm with sheep, cattle and a large garden, which sustained the family and created 4-H projects for the three daughters of owners, Ted and Ellie Martel. Once the children went onto school, Ted & Ellie wanted to supplement their income by participating in several local farmers' markets.

Using Ellie's love for cooking and Ted's marketing ability, Red Roof Farm was on of five original members of the successful Waitsfield Farmer's Market which has a vendor base of over 65 exhibitors on a weekly basis. Original products included three flavors of jam and Red Roof's famous Garden Relish. Careful attention to quality and consistent attendance at the Waitsfield Market led to invitations to join three other markets and an expanded base of customers.

In 1999, Ted & Ellie decided to join two of their daughters who settled in West Virginia. This move would allow them to be closer to their family and take advantage of the warmer southeastern climate. In August, the move was complete.

One of the daughters, Heidi, encouraged Ted & Ellie to continue their specialty food venture due to continued demand from previous customers and her desire to participate in the family business. Red Roof Farm incorporated in West Virginia in 2000 and has a product base of six jams, bread and butter pickles, garden relish and no-sugar added fruit spreads. Each batch is still hand-stirred by Ellie in her kitchen in Fayetteville.
